Rescue Readers

Come read with us!

Ventura County Animal Services' Rescue Readers Program is a program where children ages 4-14 come and read to shelter pets. The program takes place on Sundays from 3:00pm - 4:00pm at the Camarillo Animal Shelter at 600 Aviation Drive at the Camarillo Airport. Rescue Readers will be cancelled during weather events. Visit the Rescue Readers' Facebook page to learn if a session has been cancelled due to holidays or weather.

First-time readers are asked to arrive at 2:30pm for a quick orientation. Rescue readers may bring a book of their own or choose one from our cart. We have carpet squares for kids to sit on, but you can always bring something from home to sit on.

Many of our dogs are housed in indoor/outdoor kennels. During the day they have access to the outside where our Rescue Readers read from. They will be sitting a few feet from the kennel bars and while many of our dogs are large-breed and have big voices, barking typically quiets down as soon as they start reading. There's just something about a child's voice that just calms them down.

Parents are encouraged to take pictures. We only ask that you tag us on social media and note the name or ID# of the dog you child is reading to so we can help find a home for them.

All Rescue Readers must be joined by a parent or legal guardian. If you wish to participate, please message our VCAS Rescue Reader program coordinators through their Facebook or Instagram pages

We look forward to seeing you at the shelter!
