Moving can be a hassle......so make sure you give yourself enough time. Giving yourself at least 8 weeks of searching before you plan to move will make the transition for you and your pet smoother. Ventura County has no shortage of apartment homes, however many have breed restrictions or weight limits. Some property managers/landlords are flexible though.
Here are a few tips and no-no's to keep in mind:
1. Honesty is always the best policy. Sneaking your pet into “no-pets allowed” residences is risky!
2. Trying to convince a landlord to allow you a pet?
-- Show them a cute photo of your pet with accompanying vaccination paperwork. This shows you love your pet and you take good care of them.
-- Ask for a reference from your veterinarian and previous landlord showing how awesome your pet is. This could tip the decision in your favor!
-- Offer to bring your pet to meet the owner or property manager. A clean, well-behaved pet can speak volumes. (Make sure to take your dog for a walk before the visit!)
3. Once your pet has been approved, get it in writing. Make sure a pet addendum fully outlines the terms of the agreement and is signed and attached to your rental agreement.
4. Try to take a few days off after you move into a new place to help your pet adjust.
5. If a landlord still says "no", ask if you can put down a refundable Pet Deposit. Some landlords will even allow you to spread the deposit over many months.
